FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026: A Traveler’s Guide to Berlin

The United States opened its title defense at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup with a rout of China on September 4 — though Caitlin Clark, notably, wasn’t in the starting five. That result is one storyline. The other is where this is all happening: Berlin, for ten days, across two arenas, through September 13. If a trip to Germany is even loosely on the radar this month, here is how to build one around the tournament.

Two Arenas, One City

The tournament splits 16 teams across four groups and two venues, both in Berlin. Uber Arena, the larger of the two at roughly 14,000 seats, hosts two of the first-round groups and then the entire knockout stage, finishing with the final on September 13. Max-Schmeling-Halle, seating about 9,000, hosts the other two groups during the preliminary round only. Which arena matters for your trip depends entirely on when you go: early in the tournament, both venues are live; from the quarterfinals on, everything happens at Uber Arena.

Getting Around Berlin for Game Day

Berlin’s transit system makes this an easy tournament to attend without a car. Uber Arena sits in Friedrichshain, a short walk from Warschauer Straße station, served by the U1 U-Bahn line, multiple S-Bahn lines, and the Ostbahnhof mainline station one stop away. Max-Schmeling-Halle is in Prenzlauer Berg, reachable via the U2 U-Bahn to Eberswalder Straße or the S-Bahn to Prenzlauer Allee, both a walkable distance from the hall. A BVG day ticket covers both U-Bahn and S-Bahn and is the simplest way to move between venues if you’re catching games at each.

What’s Worth Seeing Near Each Arena

Uber Arena backs onto the East Side Gallery, the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, now an open-air mural gallery running along the Spree — a natural stop before or after a game. Friedrichshain and neighboring Kreuzberg also have Berlin’s densest concentration of bars and late-night food, which matters for an evening tip-off. Near Max-Schmeling-Halle, Prenzlauer Berg is quieter and more residential, built around leafy streets and the Sunday flea market at Mauerpark — worth timing a visit around if your game falls on a weekend.

Tickets

Tickets are sold through FIBA’s official ticketing channels for the World Cup, priced separately for group-stage and knockout sessions. With the hosts among the favorites and demand rising after a dominant opening win, seats for the later rounds at Uber Arena are the ones likely to move fastest — group-stage sessions at Max-Schmeling-Halle, especially for games not involving the US, are the more realistic same-week option.

Planning Around the Bracket

Because the group stage is split across two venues and the knockout rounds consolidate at Uber Arena, a short trip built around a single team’s group games looks different from a trip built around the final. Arriving for the group stage gives you a choice of neighborhoods and a lower-key city; arriving for the quarterfinals onward means everything — and everyone else attending — funnels into Friedrichshain. Book accommodation centrally and you’re within transit reach of both arenas regardless of which stage you catch.

Berlin is served by a single airport, Berlin Brandenburg (BER), connected to the city center by both S-Bahn and regional rail — budget around 30-45 minutes from touchdown to downtown.

This is the same logic behind planning a trip around the US Open in New York or a single arena show in London: fix the venue and the transit first, and the rest of the visit — neighborhood, hotel, what else to see — falls into place around it.
