Widow’s Bay Filming Locations: How to Visit the Real Cape Ann

The red clapboard fish house known as Motif No. 1 stands on a granite pier in Rockport Harbor, its wall hung with lobster buoys, with moored sailboats and shingled houses behind it.

Widow’s Bay finished the 2026 Emmy Awards with 14 wins, including Outstanding Comedy Series and a lead acting award for Matthew Rhys as the mayor of a cursed island town. Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root took the supporting awards. By Tuesday morning the show’s name was among the most searched terms in the United States, and a good share of that search was people asking the obvious question: is Widow’s Bay a real place?

It is not. The island is invented, but almost everything you see on screen is Cape Ann, the granite headland an hour north of Boston, plus a handful of towns further inland. Most of it you can reach on a commuter train and walk in an afternoon.

Rockport is the town itself

The heart of the fictional Widow’s Bay is Bearskin Neck in Rockport: a narrow spit of land lined with shingled fishing shacks that now hold galleries, ice cream counters and lobster rolls. It ends at a small lookout over the outer harbour, with Straitsmouth Island and its light station in the distance.

At the end of the harbour stands the red fish house known as Motif No. 1, endlessly painted since the 1840s and rebuilt after the blizzard of 1978 destroyed the original. If you have seen a picture of New England, you have probably seen this building. Expect to share it in summer; the crowd thins noticeably after Labor Day.

Filming on Cape Ann took place across Essex, Gloucester and Rockport in June 2025, with more shooting in Ayer and Worcester the month before. Rockport residents will point out corners the production used; the town is small enough that most people watched some of it happen.

The beach and the lighthouse are in Gloucester

The show’s beach scenes were shot at Half Moon Beach, a small crescent of sand tucked inside Stage Fort Park on the Gloucester waterfront. The park is where the area was first settled in the 1620s, and it has the things a beach day needs: lifeguards in season, restrooms, a fresh water shower, picnic tables and grills. Parking runs about $15 on weekdays and $20 at weekends and on holidays. Dogs are allowed in the park but not on the beach between May 1 and September 15.

The lighthouse in the series is Eastern Point Light, on the far side of Gloucester Harbor at the tip of Cape Ann. The light station itself is closed to the public, and this is where visitors get themselves into trouble: the approach runs through a private residential association, and parking at the gate is not allowed. Park where it is permitted, walk in, and keep to the public ground.

What you come for anyway is the Dog Bar Breakwater beside it, a granite jetty roughly 2,250 feet long running out into the Atlantic, with the harbour on one side and open ocean on the other. On a clear day you can see the Boston skyline from it. The blocks are uneven and they are slick when wet, so this is a walk for proper shoes and not for a swell.

What you cannot visit

The interiors, including most of the town hall and house sets, were built and shot at New England Studios in Devens, a working production facility that does not take visitors. The exterior used for the museum is a private house in the town of Harvard, in Worcester County. Berlin’s town hall stood in for the municipal building. All of these are either closed or somebody’s home; there is nothing to see and knocking on the door is not a fan pilgrimage, it is a stranger on the porch.

Two inland locations are genuinely open, though. The Rebecca Nurse Homestead in Danvers is a 17th-century farmhouse tied to the Salem witch trials, run as a historic site with visiting hours worth checking before you drive out. So is the Martha-Mary Chapel in Sudbury, on the grounds of the Wayside Inn, which mostly hosts weddings and is best seen from the road when it is booked.

Getting to Cape Ann without a car

This is the rare American set-jetting trip that works on public transport. The MBTA’s Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line leaves Boston’s North Station and reaches Gloucester and Rockport in about an hour. Rockport station is the end of the branch, in fare Zone 8, and has 88 free parking spaces if you are coming from elsewhere in Massachusetts.

One thing will catch you out: the line splits at Beverly, and only some trains continue to Rockport while the others run to Newburyport. Trains come every hour or two, with the longest gaps outside commuting times, so check the current timetable on the MBTA site and plan the return before you leave. Bearskin Neck is a ten-minute walk from Rockport station; from Gloucester station it is a walk of a mile or so down to Stage Fort Park, or a short taxi ride.

September and October are the best months to go. The water is still warm enough to swim, the summer crowds have gone, and the light on the granite is the reason painters colonised Rockport in the first place.

More set-jetting worth the trip

If you plan holidays around what you watch, two of our guides cover the same ground elsewhere. The Gentlemen built its manor house out of a real Gloucestershire estate that opens only a few days a year, and shot its Italian episodes on Lake Maggiore. The Dutton Ranch locations in Montana and North Texas go one better: at one of them you can rent a cabin on the actual set.

Cape Ann sits somewhere between the two. Nothing is ticketed, nothing is roped off, and the town has not rebranded itself around the show. Go while that is still true.
